The FCC believes that calls from Radio and TV stations to ask you to listen to or watch a particular station are not "solicitation" or telemarketing calls, and thus should not be prohibited like other telemarketing calls. I think this is stupid.
Luckily, the FCC will accept comments on this issue. All you have to do is tell them that you think calls from radio and TV stations are telemarketing calls that should be treated like all other telemarketing calls. That's it. And tell your friends to come here and file comments too!!!
To get the most impact from your comments, I suggest strongly that you prepare your comments in your word processor, so you can spell check, revise, print, save, and forward your comments to others. When they are ready, you can simply copy them directly into the cover page form on the right.
But regardless of how you submit your comments, you MUST fill out the contact information and enter "02-278" in the "Proceeding" field. If you don't, your comments will be mis-filed, and you have wasted your time.
The FCC requires a complete mailing address because they will sometimes send you a confirmation letter in the mail thanking you for your comments (and to make sure someone isn't falsely filing comments in your name). Your comments may be disregarded if you do not provide an accurate mailing address.
Anyone can file comments. You do not have to be a lawyer or involved in the telemarketing industry. Some of the best comments are brief, and simply relate either a specific experience, or your overall experiences as a whole with telemarketing calls. Share your pain.... tell them what it is really like out there. Believe me, the industry will be getting everyone they can to write in to claim that they like telemarketing calls, and that they appreciate the wonderful offers for goods and services that telemarketers make. I want as many real consumers as possible to write in to give the Commission the real picture.
When lots of people write in comments with the same theme, the Commission is likely to take notice of it. If hundreds of people tell them that "I have gotten telemarketing calls from radio and TV stations " or that "I think telemarketing calls for radio and TV stations should be banned" or "there should be no exemptions to the national do-not-call list for calls promoting Radio and TV stations" - that will give them good information to base their rulings on. If no one complains or voices concerns over certain practices, the Commission may conclude that those practices aren't a problem. Remember, the more comments on a particular issue, the more likely it will be addressed.
If you have gotten this far, you are at least interested in filing comments. But if you just can't find the time to write your own personal comments, there is a list of cut-and-paste comments you can copy from located here. But please consider at least rewriting them to put them into your own words. It will make your comments have more impact if you do.
DO NOT use profanity, or fly off the handle. Explain the problems to them calmly, and describe the effects the calls have had on you and your family.
DO NOT copy someone else's comments or use form letters. A single original paragraph written from the heart is worth 100 form letters.
Good Luck!
